Penny's Story: Penny was found tied up in a bag as a puppy is a park. Penny has since been scared and yet has lived with children and 2 other dogs and cared for. The family however found she was too frightened of traffic so didn't walk her. Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving her life. Penny is neutered, chipped, and fully vaccinated. Penny came in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting her new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our Dog Homing Questionnaire. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum adoption donation is £300 (£500 for a pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays. Penny's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

I met little Penny yesterday. She is so frightened in herself at the moment and it’s horrible to see. She showed no malice, despite being so scared. she let me stroke her and put a lead on her to walk. I really hope this gorgeous girl grows some confidence soon and we can show her it’s going to be okay!

I said hello to Penny yesterday and was delighted that she happily took chicken from me, I have assured her we are going to be friends and am looking forward to taking her out for a walk before too long.

I spent ten minutes yesterday sitting with little Penny in the outdoor part of her kennel.
She was comfortable with me coming in and once I settled quietly in the corner, she felt confident enough to stay nearby. Before long, she was gently—and very politely—taking pieces of sausage from my fingers. I was occasionally rewarded with a curious sniff or gentle lick on my hand, but she remained cautious whenever I tried to reach out to stroke her. In the end, I let her set the boundaries, limiting our contact to those brief moments when she chose to brush past me. Any noise elsewhere in the block would catch her attention; she’d glance around and sometimes trot inside to check if it was something to worry about, before returning to me shortly after.
She's a lovely girl and I'm certain she'll grow in confidence in no time at all.

Stephen spent 2 hours with Penny on Sunday dog whispering!

Penny's many admirers have started to work their magic. Today we went out twice. After 40 mins in the paddock, we spent quite a bit of time in the grounds. Penny took me right down to the stream and wanted to go further, but I refused as I'd left my trunks in the van. She then got 'stuck' in between The Poet's Hut and the woodland path: wandering between the 2 but unable to go the extra few yards. Marcel then appeared and Penny was able to chug back to her kennel within the safety of the posse: Marcel, Becca and Simone riding shotgun. When she reached her kennel she was happy to be back and offered licks and cuddles.
After everyone had gone home, we traveled the same route once more, with a 20 min stop in the big paddock. All good.

Today Penny went walking with Amy and Simone. I hope they got some photos because I didn't! In the meantime:

Wowow! Miss Penny has come such a long way in the week I’ve known her. Today I went to see her and her tail started wagging from inside her kennel which was already a great start. Amy and I wanted to see how she did with us out and out today. We had spent 40 minutes in her kennel last week trying to get her to relax and trust us with some toys and cuddles which she did so well. Today, Penny finally relaxed outside her kennel, in the woodland paddock. She was really brave and her tail was wagging away as she sniffed her way through the paddock. Then she wanted to play, she ran like a goofball and looks so relaxed. Penny loved having a snuggle and bum scratches! Thanks Sophie for uploading the videos for us. Here’s a picture of our beautiful, brave girl today.

Miss Penny!
Such a lovely dog, she has come on leaps and bounds already since coming into the Rescue.
Before taking her out for a walk I have spent some time with her in her kennel getting her used to me with cuddle and some kisses
Georgie and I spent about 40 minutes with her last week playing with her and a ball and some toys
She sat on my lap for cuddles and this girl loves a bum scratch and back scratch and an all over body scratch
She has the funniest reaction by curling up her lip and giving the biggest teeth smile
We took her out to the little paddock for some love and it took a bit of time for her to sniff her environment and realise that it was ok for her to play
We had a ball and she had the first ‘zoomies’ I’ve seen her do! she gave a little bark when she wanted the ball which was very gentle
She was a little nervous going back we had to let her take the lead and gave her some gentle encouragement, she allowed me to guide her with her harness to show her which way she needed to go
She’s amazing! She has showed no interest in passing dogs and she might even find it beneficial to walk with a very calm dog to start with to show her she’s in a safe place
