Barney's Story: Barney's owner went into hospital and his son could not take him in as he already had 4 dogs. A neighbour held him for 24 hours and then a pound-puller friend arranged for him to go into a Shar Pei Rescue. But, on arrival it was clear he was an Akita x Shar Pei and was unfair to mix with 7 dogs there. Was approached 10pm and the transporter had nowhere to place him as they had to head back north and couldn't take him back with them. We opened our doors at 11.30pm and took Barney in, saving his life. Barney is now neutered, chipped, and undergo vaccinations. Barney is in to our Rescue Centre nr Gatwick whilst awaiting his new family.
If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, the first step is to complete and submit our Dog Homing Questionnaire. We do not discuss dogs without a homing questionnaire submission. You must be ready and we will only contact you if we have a suitable dog. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.
Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum adoption donation is £300 (£500 for a pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.
Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers in particular. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays. Barney's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal an evolving picture and positive skills as they build trust.

Barney grew up with 4 cats before losing his home. He is gaining confidence and went to our Vets on the 16th and was neutered, and vaccinated. He as Shar pei ears and his ear canals are very tight so had treatment whilst under GAn.
Beginning to meet more walkers now. Once he knows he can trust you he is very loving and affectionate. Took him into the cattery today and gave the cats a warm tail wag through their gates.

Barney is such a sweet gentle boy. He takes treats from me so softly, I haven't attempted to walk him yet, but I would love to

Barney is all over you once he drops his guard. Nice long walk behind Bailey and Danny the other day. He was very good with traffic, roads, and the other dogs.

I have been getting to know Barney over the past few weeks, he was really struggling to make friends at the kennels because he was stressed, as so many of them are in this environment. He has a few loyal friends who have been doing wonders with him. He takes time to trust you (and rightly so!) but once he does, he is the most affectionate boy. He is fun, playful and loving. I am so glad I have put the time into this boy as he really delivers. He is stunning too as you can see from all of his pictures. He was unsure about leaving the kennel grounds with me at first, but he is now enjoying some long walks. He loves to sniff and explore and walks really well with other dogs. He does not seem to be reactive to others, just shows an interest and wants to play. I think he prefers the bigger dogs too, we were following Breeze who was being walked by Lloyd, and Barney was very keen on being his friend! He does like to jump up and put his front paws on your shoulders and give you a good lick :) I am looking forward to seeing this boy blossom

Introduction and walk with the loving Barney. Super pleased to see you and immediately wants hugs and ear, beard and hair licks.
Really easy to walk, enjoys being in other dogs company. Not a treat dog but a stop for attention hugs dog.

I am very quickly falling for this boy, he is such a love bug! Whenever you walk up to his kennel, his big tail starts wagging and then the paws go up to greet you. He genuinely smiles with every inch of his body when he sees you. It always takes a while to harness Barney, because you have to allow him to lick you and cuddle you first before any mention of a walk! And who am I to refuse a cuddle from such a handsome boy! I introduced Barney to Nigel and Natalie this week and he took to them both very quickly. Barney has taken his time to trust people since being at the kennels, but this was just fear and uncertainty. He thrives with confident people and very quickly settles if you take the lead with him. He is still building his confidence up to leave the kennel grounds and prefers to follow a pack. Once out, he loves a good long walk. You can really tell that he loves being outside. He is a very social boy and I know that with the right person, he would thrive.

First solo walk with Barney, now in his circle of trust to let him sniff everything and be ready for his hug and bodyrub attention moments.
Easy to walk no pulling, and will wait for other dogs to pass by on limited space bridleways.
Waits on command before crossing roads and not fazed by cars or lorries passing by when walking on pavement.
A very happy sole who lives being out .
